I have long been intrigued by this subtle form of retraining the nervous system, which I currently recommend to patients whose movement has been restricted by injury, cerebral palsy, stroke, fibromyalgia, or chronic pain....

I also believe that the Feldenkrais Method can help older people achieve greater range of motion and flexibility, and help all of us feel more comfortable in our bodies.

What is "The Feldenkrais Method®"?

The Feldenkrais Method® of Somatic Education is the foundation of the books and lessons available from PainFreeChoices®. Discover more healthful, more comfortable movement choices through Pamela Kihm’s books based on the Feldenkrais Method® and “skeletal engineering” – e.g. for most efficient and comfortable movement through any ball-and-socket joint in your body, you need to allow the socket as well as the ball to move.

Dr. FeldenkraisAfter years of trying to move through an active life in spite of severe pain, Moshe Feldenkrais was informed by his doctors that knee surgery might help. However, they admitted there was only a 50% chance his pain would be eliminated. The doctors also admitted that surgery might cause him to lose even more of his mobility. This was the 1940's, some twenty years after he had severely injured his knee playing soccer while attending the Sorbonne University in France earning his engineering degree.

Instead of having the surgery or continuing to force himself through pain, Dr. Feldenkrais zeroed in what he was doing differently when the pain wasn't as severe. He applied engineering principles to his own body. Those around him couldn't help but notice his improved movement and lack of pain. He soon began helping others and the Feldenkrais Method® of Somatic Education developed.

He eventually trained assistants to accommodate the large number of people needing help. Now there are over 3,000 Feldenkrais Practitioners worldwide. Click www.feldenkrais.com to find a Feldenkrais Practitioner near you.
